"Post-90s Pioneers"
Get to Know
Youth Party Members: Zhu Mengjia, Sun Ke
Profile:
Zhu Mengjia, born in 1993 in the "Nuclear Carving Town" Guangfu Town, Wu Zhong District, returned to her hometown after graduating from university to engage in nuclear carving work and founded her own studio. Her works have a unique style, winning numerous provincial and national craft art awards, and she has participated in multiple international exchanges. Currently, she serves as the Executive Vice President of the Youth Craftsmen Association of Wu Zhong District.
Heritage:
Born and raised in the "Nuclear Carving Town," Zhu Mengjia has been deeply influenced by this traditional craft since childhood and has developed a love for this art form. After graduating from Nanjing Art College, she decided to return to her hometown and pursue her lifelong dream of nuclear carving art. Back in her hometown, she studied under the national intangible cultural heritage inheritor of Guangfu nuclear carving, Xu Zhongying, to learn the skills. "Only with a steady heart can you do a good job of your work." Hand injuries are commonplace for beginners in nuclear carving, and Zhu Mengjia knows that mastering the skill takes time and patience.
Persistence:
In 2014, Zhu Mengjia established her own nuclear carving studio. Unexpectedly, she encountered a "cold winter" at the beginning of its establishment. The rise of machine nuclear carving had a significant impact on the market, which was a considerable blow to her. At that time, she managed the studio while teaching classes to children from other areas in her spare time, trying to subsidize the family expenses. At the same time, she participated in various competitions and exhibitions to increase her visibility. Finally, her work "Heart Light" won the Bronze Award at the Jiangsu Craft Art Association's Art Expo Cup. Since then, her popularity has gradually increased, and several of her works have been favored by collectors. Today, this "post-90s" inheritor of intangible cultural heritage has grown into one of the young craftsmen representatives of the "Nuclear Carving Town." Her works cover various subjects such as figures, landscapes, and flowers, and they are in high demand in the market. She has won numerous craft art awards at various levels. For example, "Cute Pets Twelve Zodiacs" won the Craft Special Award at the Fourth China Craft "Toxin Award," and "Suzhou Gardens" was included in the Israel Tel Aviv China Cultural Exchange Center. "Works have souls. Good works 'speak' and can help the author convey their life philosophy and worldview."
Blossoming
As a young party member, Zhu Mengjia has always adhered to the inheritance of culture and created anew. In her creation, while adhering to traditional carving techniques, she also creatively adds her own "little thoughts," injecting fresh blood into the traditional carving skills.
Zhu Mengjia also uses innovative forms such as online live streaming to spread the culture of nuclear carving, attracting more young people's attention, enhancing cultural identity, and allowing traditional nuclear carving to "take off" with the "wings of the Internet" to a broader world. For this reason, she has also gained the love of a group of young fans of nuclear carving. "Our nuclear carving is a national intangible cultural heritage. I hope to tell the story of my hometown through nuclear carving, inherit traditional culture, and bring new glory in the new era."
Profile:
Sun Ke, male, born in 1991, a member of the Communist Party of China, General Manager of Suzhou Cornigs Polyol Co., Ltd., and selected for the Gusu Leading Talents Program. He has successively won the National Gold Award of the 2016 "National College Students Entrepreneurship Competition Practical Competition," the Silver Award of the 2018 China Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the First Prize of the 2019 "Innovation in Jiangsu" College Students Entrepreneurship Competition, and the First Prize of the 2020 Jiangsu Province "Internet+" College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
Innovation, Firm Determination
In 2011, when Sun Ke was still an undergraduate student, he conceived the idea of entrepreneurship. In the school laboratory, he met the core members of the team. The intersection of disciplines and collision of ideas brought about new sparks. With the development of functional polyols from different technical paths, new products and application solutions were generated, solving many "bottlenecks" in the industry chain. With this research and his own business plan, he participated in the provincial college student entrepreneurship competition and won the gold award, which further strengthened his determination to start a business. After the competition, Sun Ke established Cornigs Enterprise and embarked on the journey of entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship, Steady Progress
Functional polyols can be applied to many industries such as precision electronics, new energy, and biodegradable materials. As the application industry continues to expand, the demand for product quality and production capacity is increasing. Sun Ke realized the need to build a production line to support business development. In less than three months, Sun Ke led the team to complete the construction of a ten-thousand-level purification workshop, the installation of a modular production line, and equipment commissioning. The first phase of the domestic GMP-standard functional polyol fully automated production line was successfully put into operation, and the production permit issued by the Food and Drug Administration was obtained. Now, the design of the second phase has also been completed and will officially start construction in October this year. This also means that the industrialization of the scientific research projects promoted by Sun Ke is steadily advancing.
Creation, Winning Arbitration
In 2017, just when the company's momentum was good and it entered the fast lane, the US Corning Group launched a challenge and initiated intellectual property litigation, arbitrating simultaneously in Beijing and Hong Kong. Such litigation in two places applies domestic regulations and international WIPO rules, respectively. However, for many startups, they cannot afford to lose or afford the expense. With great confidence, Sun Ke decided to "fight to the end." With the help of the Jiangsu provincial government and the provincial state-owned assets supervision and administration commission, he compiled nearly 300 pages of defense materials, comprehensively counterattacking from the legality of the company, the originality of the technology, etc., and won arbitration in Beijing and Hong Kong simultaneously. This case also became the only successful cross-border intellectual property case in Jiangsu Province in 2018.
