This is an era full of opportunities and chances, but also one filled with risks and challenges. In such times, waves of people brave enough to venture into entrepreneurship have emerged. Among them is Sun Ke, a graduate of Nanjing Tech University from the class of 2016. During his postgraduate studies, he led a team in entrepreneurship. After years of hard work, he has now become the General Manager of Suzhou Cornigs Polyol Co., Ltd. and was selected for the key program of leading talents in innovation and entrepreneurship in Suzhou. In this issue, let's take a closer look at Sun Ke's entrepreneurial journey:
With Hobbies and Interests, Diving into Entrepreneurship
After graduating from Nanjing Tech University in 2013, Sun Ke chose to continue his studies for a master's degree at the university's School of Economics and Management. During the period from 2013 to 2016, he was engaged in further studies at the school. During this learning journey, he met a group of like-minded partners and determined his entrepreneurial goals and direction.
In 2011, as a graduate student, Sun Ke, driven by his hobbies and interests, met his core team members for his future entrepreneurial journey while conducting experiments. At that time, several partners in the laboratory, with similar research fields, engaged in a brainstorming session. They discovered that developing polyols from different technological paths and utilizing interdisciplinary approaches could spark new ideas and solutions to many bottlenecks in the industry chain. This sparked Sun Ke's desire for entrepreneurship.
Since 2013, Sun Ke has been customizing the development of polyols to meet specific application demands. He researched and developed polyol "alloys" formed by combining different polyols to impart specialized functionalities required by the products. Subsequently, armed with his technology, business plan, and entrepreneurial dreams, Sun Ke participated in the provincial university student entrepreneurship competition and won the Gold Prize in the 2014 Jiangsu Province University Student Entrepreneurship Plan Competition. In 2015, his polyol "alloy" project received the Special Award for Outstanding Entrepreneurial Projects by Young College Students in Nanjing City.
Winning the gold prize ignited Sun Ke's entrepreneurial dreams and strengthened his determination to start a business. During his graduate studies, he and Nanjing Zijin jointly established Cornigs Company. From 2015 to 2016, various types of functional polyol products were successfully developed, and his products smoothly passed the quality verification process—from small-scale trials to large-scale production—validated by top multinational enterprises, entering the global supply chain of customers. With some entrepreneurial experience under his belt, Sun Ke decided to return to his hometown to start a business, founding Suzhou Cornigs Polyol Co., Ltd.
Constructing the First Production Line, Protecting Intellectual Property Rights
Products are the foundation and soul of a business. With Sun Ke's technology, functional polyols can be applied in various industries such as precision electronics, new energy, and biodegradable materials. As the scope of application industries continues to broaden, the demand for product quality and capacity increases. Sun Ke deeply realized the need for a forward-looking production line to support Cornigs's business and future development.
To achieve this, he completed the construction of a 10,000-level purification workshop, modular production line installation, and equipment commissioning and testing in less than three months. He established the first GMP-standard fully automated production line for polyols in China and obtained the production license issued by the Food and Drug Administration.
In 2017, just when Sun Ke's company was gaining momentum and entering the fast lane, Corning Group from the United States launched a comprehensive intellectual property lawsuit against him, simultaneously arbitrating in Beijing and Hong Kong. Facing such lawsuits in two different locations requiring the use of domestic regulations and international WIPO rules, it not only consumed time and energy but also incurred significant financial costs for the startup company. However, Sun Ke was not deterred by these difficulties. He had the confidence of an entrepreneur and the courage to face challenges.
With the assistance of the Jiangsu Provincial Government and Jiangsu Provincial State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, Sun Ke compiled nearly 300 pages of defense materials, leveraging the comprehensive intellectual property system to refute the accusations comprehensively, including addressing the legality of the company and the originality of the technology. He won the arbitration simultaneously in both Beijing and Hong Kong, becoming the only successful cross-border intellectual property lawsuit in Jiangsu Province in 2018!
In 2018, Sun Ke won the first prize in the Growing Group of the "Chuang Qing Chun" Jiangsu Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the first prize in the "Zhi Hui Wu Zhong" Youth Maker Competition, the Silver Award in the China Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in 2018, the first prize in the "Chuang Xiang Jiangsu" University Student Entrepreneurship Competition in 2019, and the first prize in the 2020 Jiangsu Province Internet Plus University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Today, Sun Ke is still striving on the entrepreneurial path, hoping that in the future, he can persist in technological innovation, lead the industry, and become a trailblazer in industry development!
