Excellent Project Case Study:
Cornigs Polyol:
Leading the Way in Polyol
Venturing into the Trillion-Star Blue Ocean
Today, we bring you an outstanding case from the qualification round of the top three in the Higher Education Division of the 7th "Internet Plus" University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in 2021—the CORNIGS Polyol project.
1. Project Overview
Established in 2018, CORNIGS is the first company in China dedicated to the research, production, and application of polyols. It is the first polyol investment approval project of the National Development and Reform Commission and holds the first polyol production license issued by the National Food and Medical Products Administration.
2. Market Analysis
In 2019, the government for the first time listed the development, production, and application of "polyols, biological polyols, new enzyme preparations and composite enzyme preparations, functional sugars, and composite functional ingredients" as industries encouraged for development. Polyols are a combination of sugars obtained from the continuous enzymatic hydrolysis of starch, chlorinated to produce a composition containing specific proportions of mono-, di-, and higher molecular weight polyols. By controlling the components, proportions, and molecular weights, specific functions can be achieved under specific conditions, breaking through the performance limitations of single polyols and greatly expanding the application areas of products.
3. Technical Analysis
Focusing on customer needs, CORNIGS' research and development of polyols have achieved breakthroughs in various emerging fields. Polyols can enhance the performance of bio-based materials and improve the coupling ability of heavy metals. For example, the polyols provided by CORNIGS for FujiFilm's developing solution solved the problem of winter frost resistance, adding hundreds of millions of users to the product and achieving a win-win situation for both sides. Polyols have successfully developed a series of products in fields such as biomedicine, specialty chemicals, and precision optics, completely overturning the application of single polyols and sugar-free foods. The polyol industry is expected to see a more than tenfold increase in market opportunities.
4. Core Advantages
CORNIGS has established the first integrated core technology platform in China for the research, production, and application of polyols, bringing together innovation from various fields upstream, midstream, and downstream to achieve overall breakthroughs. With an industry-leading smart factory featuring advanced manufacturing capabilities, CORNIGS has built three flexible production lines capable of continuous flow, multi-product, and multi-batch production. The company has filed a total of 29 patent applications, with 23 patents granted, establishing technological barriers from key technologies to core processes. Customer-centric, CORNIGS has introduced mature alternative functional new polyol products, new-generation sugar alcohol-based biodegradable materials, and reserve alternative polyol bio-catalyzed preparation of next-generation rare sugar products within the industry, enriching its product lineup. Its products meet global mainstream standards and have passed third-party authoritative testing by SGS, Huace, and the Provincial Quality Inspection Institute.
Currently, CORNIGS is a strategic partner of several globally renowned companies, completing market education, entering customers' global industrial chains, conducting research on future products for the next decade, and creating unique industry demonstrations. The company's sales volume has steadily increased, with cumulative revenue approaching nearly 100 million RMB. With continuous increase in research and development investment, it has obtained nearly 4 million RMB in government research funds, with annual R&D expenses increasing by over 80%.
This project aspires to base its future on mature alternative polyols, focusing on breakthroughs in biomedicine and biodegradable materials, aiming to become a demonstration enterprise with an annual output value exceeding 500 million RMB by 2024, achieving listing on the Sci-Tech Innovation Board, and leading the development of the polyol industry.
